WEDNESDAY 8TH MARCH 2022 North Norfolk saga author, Rosie Hendry, has won the Romantic Saga Award with her Norfolk-based novel, The Mother’s Day Club, for the Romantic Novelists’ Association’s annual Romantic Novel Awards for 2022. The awards celebrate excellence in romantic fiction in all its forms.

Rosie lives by the sea in North Norfolk with her husband and children. A former teacher and research scientist, she started off writing short stories for magazines, her stories gradually becoming longer as her children grew bigger. She writes uplifting, heart-warming historical fiction based on true events from our social history. Listening to her father’s tales of life during the Second World War sparked her interest in this period and she loves researching further, seeking out gems of real-life stories which inspire her writing.

She commented, “I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to have won the 2022 Romantic Saga award from the RNA, who have been so important in my writing career right from when I first joined their prestigious New Writers’ Scheme. The award champions and celebrates historical saga books which are so popular with readers, who not only love a good page-turning story but also enjoy learning more about social history as they read. The idea for The Mother’s Day Club was sparked when I stumbled across an account of expectant mothers being evacuated from London on the day war was declared, whilst researching for another book in the archives of the Imperial War Museum in London. It intrigued me as I’d never heard of expectant mothers being evacuated, only the children and thought it would be interesting to explore further and write about.

The book is set in my home county of Norfolk where I was born and grew up. I used my experience of growing up on a smallholding in the Norfolk countryside to help write the book, from blackberry picking, jam making to keeping animals, along with a good dose of family history.
