During the workshop Roz will take you through the core publishing processes for? writing, production, marketing. Guide you as to hire outside expertise, how to find the right experts and how to make best and most economical use of them. Look at the chief publishing platforms, how to make eBooks and print books and touch on audiobooks and hardbacks.
You will look at common mistakes of self-publishers – and how not to make them! Scams to steer clear of and selling your books – how the indie business model differs from the trade publishing model.
I have experience on all sides of the publishing fence. I started my career in the editorial department of a small imprint of Reed, so I learned the publishing trade the proper way! I’ve freelanced for major publishers as an editor. I’ve also ghost-written big-selling titles for those publishers, so I’ve been through all the publishing processes as an author as well as an editor.
I’ve successfully self-published my own work to professional standards and critical acclaim. My titles for writers got me the gig at The Guardian. My novels were funded as audiobooks by Amazon on the strength of their reviews and one of them broke out of indieland and was longlisted for the World Fantasy Award alongside Neil Gaiman. My travel memoir was nearly featured on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live. And I understand the extra worries and considerations that a self-publisher must contend with – budgets, deadlines, choosing professionals to help create the book. My knowledge of all this is ultra-fresh and up to date because I’ve just edited a book on creative self-publishing by Orna Ross, director of the Alliance of Independent Authors.
