Recipe for a Romcom
10 August 2024 9:00 am
Writing funny is not for the fainthearted. It’s a bit like making a souffle. Get it right and it’s a fluffy delight; get it wrong and it’s a flat mess you have to scrape off the bottom of the dish.
The perfect Romcom is a delicate balance of wit, humour and farce, folded with pace, sprinkled with some angst, layered with pathos, laced with a soupçon of suspense and peppered with passion. Once baked, it should make your reader laugh and cry, fall in love with your leads and finish the story uplifted and smiling.
Using clips from my favourite film Romcoms and examples of my own successes and failures, we’ll investigate how to balance the ‘Com’ in your ‘Rom’ and vice versa.
